Supplements

Recommending products is part of my work as a dietitian. I don’t believe that everyone needs to be taking supplements, but it is appropriate at times. Supplements are meant to be just that, supplemental. Supplements should never replace food. I believe that food comes first! And then the nutrients we can’t get from our diet should be supplemented. Remember: Supplements aren’t regulated in the U.S by the FDA. That’s why I recommend practitioner-grade products to my clients. Metagenics is a company I trust Metagenics Store.

General Wellness

Probiotic – We all know how important our gut health is! Taking a probiotic supplement is not necessary for everyone, and is not a cure-all. But if you are looking for a good probiotic for a general healthful person to support microbiome health, this is the one.

Prenatal Vitamin Packs – If you are planning on becoming pregnant or are pregnant/breastfeeding, it is essential to take a prenatal vitamin. Let’s build a little baby genius!

Vitamin D3 – SUNSHINE Vitamin! You can get this for free by going outside for 30-60 minutes with skin exposed (no sunscreen). During wintertime (unless your vacaying near the equator), the sun rays are not strong enough, so you better supplement to prevent that seasonal depression. If you are experiencing symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency (fatigue, tiredness, low mood, getting sick often, bone pain), ask your doctor to check your 25-OH Vitamin D levels.

Fish Oil – If you do not consume fatty fish (salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel, trout) at least twice a week, you are not meeting your DHA and EPA nutrient needs. If you avoid taking fish oil because you’ve experienced those fishy burps, I get it. I have yet to experience that fishy taste since switching to Metagenics OmegaGenics fish oil. Pro tip: Take your fish oil before lunch so it leaves the stomach quickly.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral needed for hundreds of enzymatic reactions. Unfortunately, most American’s are not getting enough dietary magnesium. To learn more about magnesium, read my article The Importance of Magnesium.

  • Magnesium Citrate – Take 3-4 tablets in the evening to support bowel movements if you struggle with constipation (hard to pass, painful)
  • Epsom salts – Add 2-4 cups to your bath and soak for at least 20 minutes. You can absorb magnesium through your hair follicles.
  • Magnesium Oil Spray   – Spray twice on each forearm. You will feel a tingling sensation. This is normal. You may also spray in other sore muscle areas. (I seriously pass out 20 minutes after spraying this magnesium oil!)
  • Magnesium Glycinate – to support muscle relaxation in the evening to support sleep
